Volunteer: Marta Choudry at the VliegSuperMouchefestival
Assistant to Benoit Dewael for the SuperVliegSuperMouche festival: that is Marta Choudry’s volunteer internship for her ‘Dutch as a second language’ training at CVO Lethas.
For six months at three afternoons per week, she assists the festival coordinator at her location stand in Wiels. She attends meetings, writes reports, makes timetables and has a great time, a SuperTijdSuperTemps. The festival itself is a blast, the weather is wonderful and instead of the expected 2500 visitors, there are at least 5000 people of all ages. Marta works with the artists and only walks through the park at the end. She meets happy people who congratulate her. Being satisfied herself, Marta responds: “well done, c’etait top!”
Marta has been in Belgium for 7 years now, living in Brussels with her Pakistani husband and her five-year-old son Ahmed. She has known her husband for 16 years. She met him in her hometown of Lisbon. They are very different: different roots, different language and different religion. “But it works!” she says with conviction. “He is a Muslim, I’m a Catholic. I follow the best of both religions. We are very open to each other.”
Her Dutch is good, with only a small hesitation now and then that could easily pass for thoughtfulness. The internship in Wiels has helped her move forward. Everybody is congenial and friendly. The group is international. And she got a taste for more, as she coyly says: “Hopefully, I get offered a job at my evaluation!”
